A Good Day of Music

Bands Are Booked. This Is Becoming a Real Show.

There is a particular point in organizing a benefit show when the thing stops existing primarily in your head and starts becoming an actual event.

I think we've officially reached it.

The bands are almost completely booked for the Heather Doherty Benefit.

On Sunday, November 1st, we're taking over Society Clubhouse at 967 College Street in Toronto for a full day of live music, drinks, merch and fundraising. The doors open at 1 PM and we're going until 2 AM, with a matinee followed by an evening show.

The plan from the beginning has been ambitious.

And now we can announce them.

Michael O'Grady
Quin and Tom
Michelle Rumbell and Shelley Coopersmith
Ron Leary Folk Trois
Derek Downham
Lucas Stagg
Alec Fraser and Mike Daley
Birthday Squirrel
Nate Mills and the Consenting Adults
And More to Come

There are still a few more bands to announce, including some people we're extremely excited about having on this bill.

We're going to keep a few things under wraps for a little longer.

WHY WE'RE DOING THIS

As fun as it is putting together a ridiculous full day of bands, there is a much bigger reason behind all of this.

This show is for our friend Heather Doherty, who lost her home and virtually everything in it to a devastating fire. Heather and her dog Harley were rescued together from the second-storey of her home. They got out. Most of what was inside the house didn't.

Heather was uninsured.

That means there wasn't an insurance cheque waiting to pay for temporary housing, replace what was lost or deal with the enormous cleanup left behind.

For people in Roncesvalles, Heather may also be familiar as the woman behind Maggie's Farm, the neighbourhood business she ran for roughly 15 years. She's been part of this community for a long time.

Now we're trying to show up for her.

Money raised through the benefit will help with the very unglamorous reality that comes after a fire: temporary living expenses, replacing essentials, clearing rubble, dealing with mould and making the damaged house safe enough for the work ahead.

There isn't a tidy inspirational version of what happened.

It was awful.

So we're doing something useful about it.

ONE VERY LONG DAY OF MUSIC

The Heather Doherty Benefit isn't a couple of bands playing for an hour or two.

We're making a day of it.

The doors are at 1 PM and the music starts at 3 PM, with the matinee portion of the event, and we're keeping things going into the night. By the time we're finished, ten+ bands will have taken the stage.

There'll also be benefit merch, drinks, snacks, fundraising and plenty more happening around the music.

And yes, this is going to be a long day.

That's the point.

Come for a band. Stay for five. Discover somebody you've never heard before. Buy a shirt. Have something to drink. Bring your friends. Go get dinner and come back. Make a day out of it.

The remaining bands will be announced soon, along with more details about the day and everything else we're putting together.

For now, here's what you need to know:
