Good Songs for Good Neighbours: The Heather Doherty Benefit
On November 1, we're taking over Society Clubhouse in Toronto for a full day and night of live music, drinks, snacks, local businesses, benefit merch and fundraising for Heather Doherty.
The Heather Doherty Benefit is coming together as a big neighbourhood fundraiser following the fire that destroyed Heather's home and virtually everything she owned.
We're still booking bands and putting the final pieces of the day together, so the full music roster will be announced soon. What we can tell you is that we're building a packed lineup of Toronto bands and musicians, with an all-ages matinee followed by a 19+ evening show.
Tickets are $25, with money raised helping Heather with immediate living expenses and the enormous cleanup and recovery still ahead.
And the show is only part of it.
Why We're Doing This
Heather survived the fire and escaped from the house with Harley, but virtually everything else was lost.
She was uninsured and since then, recovery has meant finding temporary housing, replacing basic necessities and dealing with a badly damaged house that still requires an incredible amount of work.
There's rubble to remove. Electrical and plumbing issues that need attention. Mould remediation has become part of the process. Then there are all the smaller expenses that come with suddenly having to rebuild an everyday life from scratch.
The GoFundMe has been helping with those costs.
Now we're getting everyone into a room for a day of music, mutual support, and camaraderie.
The Bands Are Coming
Music is going to run throughout the day, beginning with an all-ages matinee and continuing into a 19+ evening show.
We're still adding bands and musicians to the bill, and we'll announce the complete roster once everything is confirmed.
The idea from the beginning has been to make this more than a couple of bands playing a quick fundraiser. We want to put together a genuinely great day of Toronto music—something people would want to come to even under much better circumstances.
Or, as one of our shirts puts it:
Good bands. Bad circumstances.
Watch for lineup announcements as we get closer to November 1.
Maggie's Farm Is Coming Back for the Day
One part of the benefit we're especially excited about is the return of Maggie's Farm—at least for an afternoon.
Heather ran Maggie's Farm on Roncesvalles for around 15 years, and the shop became part of her connection to the neighbourhood.
For the benefit, Maggie's Farm will have its own booth, bringing a little piece of Heather's old store into the event.
If you remember Maggie's Farm from Roncesvalles, this is your chance to come say hello.
The Benefit Shop
We've also gone slightly overboard making things.
There will be a full selection of Heather Doherty Benefit merch available at the event, including apparel, tote bags, buttons, stickers and posters featuring Harley has become our extremely reluctant mascot.
You'll see designs including Good Music for Bad Times, Good Songs for Good Neighbours, Drink Locally. Panic Collectively. and Trial by Fire.
Buying something gives you a souvenir from the benefit while putting more money toward helping Heather.
Roncesvalles Is Showing Up
We're also putting together a silent auction featuring donations from businesses in the Roncesvalles community.
This part of the benefit feels particularly important.
Heather spent years running a business on Roncesvalles, so we're reaching out to the businesses that make up the neighbourhood today and asking them to help us build an auction worth sticking around for.
We'd like to thank the following businesses for their generous donations:
The Cookery, The Merchantile, Bluebird Bar, Purple Tree Cannabis, Jewel Envy, Alimentari, Dilse, Willem and Jools Flowers, Round the Horn, Scout, Bacan, Coal Miner's Daughter, Barque, Pollocks Home Hardware, Bathing Belle, Doll Factory by Damzels, Pizzeria Defina, Ecotique, Revue Cinema, Café Polonez, and the Local Pub .
If you're a local business that would like to contribute an item, gift certificate, service or experience to the silent auction, we'd love to hear from you.
Drinks, Snacks and a Very Long Day
There are a lot of ways to respond when something terrible happens to someone you care about and this is ours.
There will be drinks and snacks available throughout the event, music onstage and plenty happening around the room between sets.
Come for the matinee.
Stay for the evening.
See a band you know and discover one you don't.
Visit the Maggie's Farm booth.
Bid on something in the silent auction.
Buy a button or a sticker for a couple of bucks.
Buy a shirt. Tote bag. Hat.
Have a drink.
Bring your friends.
Together, we can make the months after losing everything considerably easier.
That's what November 1st is about.
It's a fundraiser, but we also want it to be a really good day.
Come Make Some Noise
There is still plenty more to announce.
More bands are being confirmed. Silent-auction donations are coming together. Merch is being made. Posters are going up. And we're working on all the other little details required to turn an idea into a very full day at the Society Clubhouse.
We'll keep posting updates as November 1st gets closer.
For now, save the date and tell your friends.
